Can you see the advantages of
speaking a second – or even a third
– language? Corporations and Law
Enforcement certainly do.
In fact, think about this for a minute –
the proliferation of the internet has
made the world a lot smaller. Almost
overnight, we can now converse with
anybody, anywhere. This makes for a
daunting task for many large companies and law enforcement – they have
executives and field agents that are
valuable to them, but now they want
these people to learn a second language
– and learn it fast – to make them more
effective in today's connected world.
How hard is it to learn a new
language?
There was a time when it was very
hard. Obviously, learning a new
language from just a book is daunting.
Combine a book and a teacher, and it
becomes a little easier (if not time
consuming, as one has to fit classes into their schedules.) As technology got
better, we started seeing systems and
tapes and similar, all giving faster and
better results than older methods (if
you search online for "learning a new
language", you'll find plenty of options.) However, it would make sense that to
find the best and fastest method, one
would look to organizations that need
their people to learn new languages
fast. International corporations come to
mind, as does law enforcement, particularly law enforcement that deals
with international issues and terrorism.
Thus, for the best results, it pays to
search out these organizations, and find
out what they purchased to teach their
own people new languages.
How does the FBI do it?
To give an example of such an
organization, we'll look at the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (the "FBI" to
us). The FBI purchased a system called
the Pimsleur Approach. This is a language learning system developed by
Dr. Paul Pimsleur, and gives marked
results in 10 days or less. In fact,
besides the FBI, more than 25 million
people worldwide have purchased this
same system. This is just one system that's out
there, but the FBI is an organization that
needs results fast. So the system they
purchased is probably a good place to
start looking.
