Torture: Amnesty Int’l report indicts police, military

Amnesty International, on Thursday, accused the Nigeria Police and military personnel of torturing women, men and children as punishment, to extort money or to extract confessions as a shortcut to solving cases.

Launching its report, entitled, "Welcome to hell fire: Torture and other ill-treatment in Nigeria," the organisation, which is running a global campaign against the use of torture around the world, accused Nigeria's security personnel of using a wide range of torture methods, including beatings, shootings and rape.

In the new report launched in Abuja, on Thursday, it said the widespread use of torture by police and the army was exacerbated by a weak criminal justice system in the country.

Reacting, the police, through their spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu, in a statement, said that while the police did not want to question the freedom of Amnesty International to earn its relevance and bread, the Nigeria Police took exceptions to some blatant falsehoods and innuendos contained in the report.

According to him, for the police, "it smacks of indecency and intemperate language to liken our nation Nigeria, to hell fire," adding that it could not be true.
