Pope Francis has called for abolition of life imprisonment ,saying it offers revenge for victims instead of pursuing true justice. He told representatives from the International Association of Penal Law:
"It is impossible to imagine that states today cannot make use of another means than capital punishment to defend peoples' lives from an unjust aggressor. Media and politicians advocated 'violence and revenge, public and private, not only against those responsible for crimes, but also against those under suspicion, justified or not' Catholic teaching does not proscribe capital punishment. 'All Christians and men of good faith are therefore called upon today to fight, not only for the abolition of the death penalty – whether it is legal or illegal and in all its forms... and this, for me, is linked to life sentences. A sentence of life (without parole) is a hidden death penalty."
While surfing the internet this afternoon, precisely on eazygist, I came across this headline "Pope Francis Calls for Abolition of Life Imprisonment" which immediately caught my attention and so I decided to share my personal thoughts on this important issue so raised by His Holiness, the Pope.
As he has rightly said, Life Imprisonment which to me equals death sentences incured on some capital offenders are not worth it as it leaves no justice laid down for the people who should learn from it.
Take the case of the sentenced soldiers for instance, of what benefit is that to us? I think as Africans, all these laws which were put in place by some foreign lords for the so called APES of Africa should be abolished as pointed out by the Pope. It only amount to creating more sorrows for the people whom are going to be left behind.
I support the total Abolition of Life Imprisonment.
What are personal views about this issue, feel free to share it.
